Founded in 1989, the Victorian Flute Ensemble is one of Australia’s premier flute ensembles. Its members include current and former flute students, teachers, and passionate amateurs from a wide range of professions, united by a shared love of flute playing.
The ensemble features piccolo, concert, alto, and bass flutes to create a rich and distinctive sound. Its diverse and entertaining repertoire spans Baroque and Classical works, contemporary compositions written for flute ensemble, and popular arrangements.
In addition to performing in concerts and competitions across Victoria and beyond—including in New Zealand and Tasmania—the ensemble plays an active educational role. It regularly presents workshops and concerts that bring together flute players of all ages and skill levels to explore technique, interpretation, and ensemble playing.
Since 2003, under the direction of Carolyn Grace, the ensemble has presented themed performances that blend music with storytelling, poetry, props, and other creative elements. Past themes include Folk & Fantasy, Animal Portraits, Flutes in the Garden, Colours of the Rainbow, Once Upon a Time, Cityscapes, and many more.
The ensemble also performs seasonally, sharing Christmas carols and well-known favourites at retirement homes and community events throughout the year.
Carolyn Grace, conductor and artistic director, brings a wealth of experience as a flautist, pianist, conductor, and music educator. She holds a Master of Music Studies, a Bachelor of Music Education, and Associate Diplomas in both flute and piano. Carolyn also holds degrees in Ancient History and Egyptology, and continues to perform, arrange music, and serve as Vice President of the Victorian Flute Guild.
