Professional Development Day 2024

On Saturday 18 May 2024, the Victorian Flute Guild hosted its annual Professional Development Day at St Peter’s Eastern Hill Anglican Church in East Melbourne.

This year’s theme—Building blocks and breakthroughs for teaching beginner to advanced flautists—featured two insightful sessions led by experienced educator Joanna Sullivan and music psychologist Simone Maurer (PhD).

Joanna Sullivan opened the event with “Teaching the Fundamentals of Beginner Flute,” offering practical, creative strategies for designing engaging, structured lessons that build a strong technical foundation from the start.

In the second session, Simone Maurer explored “The Psychology of Motivation and Procrastination in Music Learning and Practice.” Her session drew on the latest research to help teachers and students better understand the emotional and cognitive factors that shape musical development.

Attendees received professional development certificates and left the event equipped with renewed inspiration and practical tools to apply in their teaching studios.
