Eliza Shephard Leads VFG Professional Development Morning

On the morning of Saturday 26 August 2023 members of the Victorian Flute Guild gathered for an inspiring Professional Development Day led by Eliza Shephard, acclaimed flautist and ABC Young Performer of the Year.

Held from 9:30am to 12:30pm, the session offered participants a rare opportunity to explore the flute in fresh and unexpected ways. Eliza guided the group through a range of activities incorporating improvisation, stagecraft, and extended techniques, encouraging everyone to approach their playing with curiosity and openness.

Drawing on her experience in both classical and contemporary performance—and over 40 productions in dance and musical theatre—Eliza shared practical insights and creative tools that sparked thoughtful discussion and lively experimentation. From unconventional sounds to new approaches to presence and performance, the morning challenged and inspired in equal measure.

We thank Eliza for her generosity, enthusiasm, and the spirit of exploration she brought to the session. It was a morning to remember—and a reminder of just how much possibility lies within our instruments when we’re willing to step outside the familiar.

Stay tuned for future professional development opportunities from the Victorian Flute Guild.
