Victorian Flute Guild President Paula Rae attended the Just Flutes Festival at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in August 2025, a major international gathering of flautists, teachers, technicians and instrument makers. The event was a sell-out, drawing attendees from across Europe and beyond.
Paula visited for a single day with a particular focus on the Trade Hall, where she explored the newest professional instruments, accessories and flute-making innovations. The Trade Hall featured flutes across all price points and materials — including silver, gold and platinum — and Paula spent time trialling instruments and speaking with makers and technicians. Brands on display included Muramatsu, Altus, Powell, Haynes, Miyazawa and Yamaha, along with piccolos, alto and bass flutes, historical flutes, contemporary headjoint designs, ergonomic supports and a wide range of specialist accessories.
Across the wider festival, internationally recognised performers such as Emily Beynon, Juliette Hurel, Michael Cox and Ian Clarke presented recitals, workshops and masterclasses. The programme also offered flute-ensemble opportunities, repertoire exploration and sessions devoted to technique, pedagogy and performance practice.
With world-class performers, hands-on access to leading instruments and a schedule full of creative and educational activity, the August 2025 Just Flutes Festival presented a vibrant look at the global flute community and the artistry and craftsmanship that support it.
